Weak charge form factor and radius of 208Pb through parity violation in electron scattering

چکیده
We use distorted wave electron scattering calculations to extract the weak charge form factor FW (q̄), the weak charge radius RW , and the point neutron radius Rn of 208Pb from the Lead Radius Experiment (PREX) parity-violating asymmetry measurement. The form factor is the Fourier transform of the weak charge density at the average momentum transfer q̄ = 0.475 fm−1. We findFW (q̄) = 0.204 ± 0.028 (exp) ± 0.001 (model). We use the Helm model to infer the weak radius from FW (q̄). We find RW = 5.826 ± 0.181 (exp) ± 0.027 (model) fm. Here the experimental error includes PREX statistical and systematic errors, while the model error describes the uncertainty in RW from uncertainties in the surface thickness σ of the weak charge density. The weak radius is larger than the charge radius, implying a “weak charge skin” where the surface region is relatively enriched in weak charges compared to (electromagnetic) charges. We extract the point neutron radius Rn = 5.751 ± 0.175 (exp) ± 0.026 (model) ± 0.005 (strange) fm from RW . Here there is only a very small error (strange) from possible strange quark contributions. We find Rn to be slightly smaller than RW because of the nucleon’s size. Finally, we find a neutron skin thickness of Rn − Rp = 0.302 ± 0.175 (exp) ± 0.026 (model) ± 0.005 (strange) fm, where Rp is the point proton radius.

Request for Beam Time to Complete PREX
This document addresses the beam time required to achieve the design sensitivity of the PREX experiment. As we elaborate below, a 1% measurement of the neutron radius using an electroweak probe will remain compelling for years to come. We estimate that the recently completed physics run of the PREX experiment will yield a ∼2.5% measurement of the neutron radius. While this is a major accomplish...
متن کاملParity Violation in Astrophysics
Core collapse supernovae are gigantic explosions of massive stars that radiate 99% of their energy in neutrinos. This provides a unique opportunity for large scale parity or charge conjugation violation. Parity violation in a strong magnetic field could lead to an asymmetry in the neutrino radiation and recoil of the newly formed neutron star. Charge conjugation violation in the neutrino-nucleo...
متن کاملParity Violation in Polarized Electron Scattering
Parity violation has been well established in particle physics for many years, since the 1950's where it was. first seen in beta decay processes. The strong and electromagnetic forces are parity conserving, and the experimental evidence that parity was not conserved in weak processes came somewhat as a surprise. The weak forces are responsible for the decay of radioactive nuclei, and it was in ...
متن کاملParity Violation, the Neutron Radius of Lead, and Neutron Stars
The neutron radius of a heavy nucleus is a fundamental nuclear-structure observable that remains elusive. Progress in this arena has been limited by the exclusive use of hadronic probes that are hindered by large and controversial uncertainties in the reaction mechanism. The Parity Radius Experiment at the Jefferson Laboratory offers an attractive electro-weak alternative to the hadronic progra...
متن کاملNeutron star structure and the neutron radius of 208Pb.
We study relationships between the neutron-rich skin of a heavy nucleus and the properties of neutron-star crusts. Relativistic effective field theories with a thicker neutron skin in 208Pb have a larger electron fraction and a lower liquid-to-solid transition density for neutron-rich matter. These properties are determined by the density dependence of the symmetry energy which we vary by addin...
